Guangzhou Metro FAQ
How many lines does the Guangzhou Metro have?
The network has 19 metro lines plus the Zhujiang New Town APM people mover and the intercity Guangfo Line to Foshan. Together they serve more than 300 stations over roughly 780 km of track, which makes Guangzhou one of the three largest systems in the world.
What are the operating hours?
Most lines run from about 6:00 am until around midnight. Last train times vary by line and direction, roughly between 10:45 pm and 12:10 am, so check the platform sign if you are travelling late. Hours are sometimes extended for holidays and major events.
How much does a ride cost and how do I pay?
Fares are distance based, starting at 2 yuan and rising to a maximum of 20 yuan for a single journey. The APM line is a flat 2 yuan. You can buy a single journey token from a machine, tap a Yang Cheng Tong card for a 5 percent discount, or scan a metro QR code through Alipay or WeChat Pay.
How do I get to and from Baiyun International Airport?
Take the Line 3 North Extension, which serves Airport South for Terminal 1 and Airport North for Terminal 2. To reach the city centre, ride toward Tiyu Xilu and change at Jiahewanggang for Line 2, or continue to Tiyu Xilu and Tianhe for Line 1. The trip to the centre takes about an hour.
Is there English signage and announcements?
Yes. Stations, maps, ticket machines and on train announcements all use English alongside Chinese, so the system is straightforward for first time visitors.
Do I need to pass a security check?
Yes. Every station entrance has a bag X-ray and you may be checked with a wand. Avoid carrying knives, flammable liquids or large aerosol cans, as these are confiscated.
