The History of the Tower

From architectural vision to cultural icon

Originally built to showcase China's growing prowess in modern engineering and architecture, the Canton Tower was completed in 2010 for the 16th Asian Games held in Guangzhou.

Designed by Dutch architect Mark Hemel and his architectural firm, Information Based Architecture (IBA), the tower was once the world's tallest structure when measured by its height to the top of its antenna. At 610 metres, it held the title until it was surpassed by the Tokyo SkyTree in 2011.

The tower was built as part of the city's efforts to symbolise its shift towards modernization and urban renewal. The slender, twisting design reflects the fluidity and dynamism of the city itself. It stands as a beacon of the vibrant, forward-thinking metropolis of Guangzhou, signifying both the city's rich cultural history and its ambitions for the future.

"The Canton Tower represents the synthesis of Guangzhou's historical heritage and its future aspirations."

- Mark Hemel, Lead Architect
