1Haizhu Square (海珠广场) — Classic Canton

Old-school Canton meets riverside revival

Haizhu Square has been revitalised since the pandemic and was once the undisputed centre of Guangzhou nightlife. The thumping 2000s-era clubs Bound, Hei Hei and Baby Face are long gone, eclipsed by the rise of downtown Tianhe and later Zhujiang New Town.

The flagship Guangzhou location of British pub chain Happy Monk has recently opened here, set in a contemporary development with commanding views over the Pearl River toward Zhujiang New Town. A short walk away is the Indian restaurant Masala King, a solid pick for spice-craving visitors.

2Canton Place (广粤天地) — Fine Dining

Upmarket piazza dining for discerning palates

Canton Place sits in an upmarket residential pocket built around a large commercial piazza and home to some of Guangzhou's most polished restaurants. The dining mix spans Italian, German, Japanese, Spanish, Mexican and Argentinian kitchens, alongside a burger joint and a contemporary European concept restaurant.

3Canton Tower & Party Pier (琶醍) — City Lights & Skyline Views

Riverside rooftops below the Canton Tower

Set along the banks of the Pearl River beneath the Canton Tower, Party Pier (Pa Ti) is one of Guangzhou's most vibrant nightlife precincts. Once a working Zhujiang Brewery site, the post-industrial waterfront has been transformed into a dedicated entertainment zone of international bars and riverside clubs, with some of the best skyline views in the city.

The most photographed venue at Party Pier is the rooftop bar and restaurant JoJo's Riverside. One of the newest additions is Cages, a multi-sport bar and gaming venue inside the Zhujiang Beer Museum. For something louder, dip into pounding clubs like W-Suns or the cowboy-themed bar Mr Rocky. Behind the Canton Tower, a new development now hosts the relocated GOAT, formerly of Huajiu Lu.

4Zhujiang New Town (珠江新城) — Expat Central

Guangzhou's modern CBD nightlife hub

As Guangzhou's modern business district, Zhujiang New Town offers the city's most concentrated upscale nightlife scene, with a dense cluster of international restaurants and stylish bars built for an expat and business-traveller crowd.

The foreign bar street has gravitated to Huajiu Lu (华就路), anchored by the classic British pub Morgans, the newly opened grill Butcher's Block, the hole-in-the-wall bar ATOC, and the Mexican cantina Bandidos. A craft beer house and a Vietnamese restaurant sit along the same strip. Around the corner, Americana joints Gails and 13 Factories draw a steady crowd, while Indian restaurant Little Papa remains a reliable staple. The original flagship Happy Monk branch is tucked inside the Kingold building.

5Liede (猎德) — Destination Delights

The quieter, riverside half of Zhujiang New Town

Liede sits on the opposite side of the central axis park that bisects Zhujiang New Town and offers a slightly more laid-back alternative. The rocking Irish bar Hooley's is centre stage for live music, and down the eat-street Xinsheng Lu sits the late-night club OMMA.

Xinsheng Lu runs into Liede Dadao, and across the road into Liede Commercial Tao, home to a cluster of venues in a faux-European-style development. Further down Liede Dadao toward the river, Lieren Feng is a newer development built around a creek lined with "ancient"-style buildings, including an Italian restaurant and a Turkish restaurant along the canal promenade. For lunch, drop into the Eating Table inside the GTLand Plaza Autumn building, or the concept restaurant Ganea opposite the W Hotel.

6Taojin (淘金) — Garden Hotel Area

Guangzhou's original expat neighbourhood

Taojin, centred around the Garden Hotel, was Guangzhou's original foreigner zone. Early expat watering holes like the Hill Bar (despite what some outdated listings claim) and the Elephant Castle have long since closed.

One of Guangzhou's earliest and largest restaurants, Sultan, is still going strong, with queues forming during Canton Fair season. Sultan's serves Turkish staples in a grand setting, while Mado offers a more contemporary Turkish dining experience with excellent gelato.

On one side of the Garden Hotel, the street Jianshe Liu Ma Lu was once known as Guangzhou's red-light district, a reputation it shook off long ago. Following the 2010 Asian Games clean-up, the street is currently a metro construction site, with a return to its former bar-strip energy expected once Line 13 work is complete, likely in late 2026.

Taojin also has several Indian options, including Bombay Grill in the Overseas Chinese Village and another branch of Little Papa in the Asia International Hotel. Further along Huanshi Dong Lu sits Xiaobei, Guangzhou's "Little Africa" district, with Nepalese, Turkish and Middle Eastern restaurants.

7Panyu (番禺) — Party in Panyu

Guangzhou's southern nightlife alternative

Panyu, south of the city centre, is home to a growing expat community and an expanding mix of international restaurants and entertainment venues, offering a relaxed alternative to the city-centre scene.

Around Nancun Wanbo metro station, Panyu's new city centre is gaining its own gravity. The Four Seas development is the area to watch, with the North American craft bar GOAT, German beer hall Paulaner Wirtshaus, Italian restaurant Porto Cervo Pizzeria, and the large Chinese nightclub Catwalk. Across the wider Panyu district, Memo Shawarma is also worth seeking out for Western-style fare.

8Dongshankou (东山口) — Historic Hipster Hood

Heritage architecture, speakeasy energy

Dongshankou is a charming heritage district with a strong mix of international dining, from Western-style cafes to fusion kitchens. Known for its turn-of-the-century architecture, the area is full of hidden gems tucked along narrow, lively streets.

9Tianhe Downtown — Malls & Neighbourhood Bars

The original downtown, before Zhujiang New Town

Before the rise of Zhujiang New Town, downtown Tianhe was home to many of Guangzhou's foreign establishments. Its mega malls still host corporate chains like Taco Bell and Outback Steakhouse, alongside a French restaurant, a Russian restaurant and a discotheque.

More interesting than the malls is the former Olympic Village, tucked between Huangpu Dadao and Tianhe Lu. Once the athletes' village for the 1991 China National Games, it is now home to a cluster of cute neighbourhood bars, cafes and restaurants.

Wherever your night in Guangzhou takes you, Lanzhou Lamian remains the ubiquitous go-to for travelling foreigners. This hand-pulled beef noodle dish from northwest China wins over Western palates with its savoury, zesty broth, street-level convenience and low price. Look for a white-and-green shopfront with halal signage, a reliable sign of a good bowl nearby.
